BEYOND ARCHITECTURE — Designing a Community
無為自然 — Creating in Harmony with Nature
SUKIMONO — Gotsu, Shimane, Japan

At SUKIMONO, architecture, craftsmanship and everyday life come together. Architects, carpenters, furniture makers and textile designers work under one roof, connecting design directly with making.

Furniture and materials recovered from akiya—vacant houses—are repaired and reinterpreted, finding new uses while retaining traces of their earlier lives.

Their philosophy of 無為自然 (Mui Shizen) encourages observing and working with the inherent qualities of what already exists. Design becomes a process of understanding materials, recognising possibilities and knowing when to intervene.

Through this shared practice, SUKIMONO connects people, preserves knowledge and contributes to the continuing life of rural communities.
