Across Shimane, reddish-brown rooftops shimmer with the changing light. These are Sekishu-gawara (石州瓦), traditional ceramic tiles shaped by local materials, craftsmanship and climate.
Founded in 1806, Kamedani Ceramics fires its tiles at approximately 1,350°C to withstand salty winds, rain and winter snow. Their distinctive colour comes from an iron-rich glaze made with local Kimachi stone (来待石).
Each roof carries a connection between land and craft: earth becomes ceramic, ceramic becomes architecture, and architecture becomes part of the landscape.
二百二十年、陶に宿る魂。
