Note 13 — Another Corner of Paradise

Another hidden corner of paradise in Yunotsu. A chance encounter with a monkey, a kind policeman, a local fisherman with squid, and an extraordinarily beautiful sunset at Kushijima. Small, unexpected moments where nature, everyday life and the changing light reveal another layer of this place.

Yunotsu, Shimane

There is something extraordinary about Yunotsu. Just when I think I am beginning to know this little town, it reveals another unexpected corner of beauty.

This time, we discovered a second beach — Kushijima. On our way, a monkey casually appeared along the road. Later, a friendly policeman warned us about bears in the area and suggested carrying small bells when walking.

At the beach, we encountered a local fisherman with squid — another glimpse into the everyday relationship between the people of Yunotsu and the sea. And then came the sunset. The light slowly transformed the coastline. Colours softened, reflections shifted across the water, and the surrounding landscape seemed to take on another character.

It was extraordinarily beautiful. For a moment, everything felt suspended between the sea, the sky and the fading light. What continues to fascinate me about Yunotsu is how nature and everyday life coexist so quietly. A fisherman, a passing monkey, a conversation with a policeman, the changing light — each encounter adds another layer to my understanding of this place.

Perhaps paradise is not somewhere we need to search for. Sometimes it reveals itself in the simplest and most unexpected moments. And Yunotsu seems to have an endless collection of them.
